AREA WALK 10 - RALIABEAG AND PHONES

raliabeg

Follow the Perth Road (B9150) as far as its junction with the A9 at Raliabeag ( An Rath Liath Beag -- the little settlement of the grey plain or fortified dwelling). Cross the A9 with care and take the track directly opposite through a gate beside a small plantation. Keep on this track (do not take the left fork) up onto the moor until it forks close by an old fence. At this point the track is indistinct. Continue by the right fork through a metal kissing gate (which can be seen quite clearly), until it peters out onto the moor.

After that, keeping as much as possible to the high ground, - it is very wet and boggy here - make your way south-eastward to the Wade Road, leaving little Lochan Dubh, (An Lochan Dubh -- the black lochan), to your right and crossing the burn, Allt na Feithe Moire ( Allt na Feithe Moire -- the burn of the big morass), which is often flooded, by one of the plank footbridges. Most are in a state of disrepair and need care in crossing. Make your way up the grassy slope until you reach the Wade Road. Turn right and follow the road, passing the small dammed loch, till you reach Phones Lodge. Your choices here are to turn left and continue along the metalled road, passing Loch Etteridge on your way, to join the A9, then turn right for Raliabeag and Newtonmore; or turn right, past the cottage and follow the road until a white post is reached. The area between the cottage and the white post is extremely sensitive, with pheasant and partridge stocks being raised. Please do not deviate from the road. When the white post is reached either follow the road back to the A9 or turn right onto the moor, until you are back at the boundary fence when the path crossing the moor back to Raliabeag will be visible in front of you.
