Local walks in Newtonmore

There are several routes you can walk in and around Newtonmore.

The following are described in detail, with maps, in the Wildcat Trail brochure, obtainable for £2.50 from the community-run The Wildcat Centre.  

If the Wildcat Centre is closed, a copy of the Wildcat Trail brochure can be purchased from the Post Office. 



Allt a' Chaorainn PDF  | Print |  E-mail

This walk takes you to Johnny Blair's Garden.   Johnny Blair was a local man who made a garden with trees, flowers and vegetables on the top of the hill to prove that crops could grow even on such an unpromising site. Its unusual profile is due to its use in prehistoric times as a double palisaded enclosure.

A’ Chailleach summit  is 930 metres high, (3050 ft), one of the highest in the Monadhliath (Am Monadh Liath -- the grey mountain range).

From the village square head east, towards Kingussie. At the Balavil Sports Hotel turn right down Golf Course Road till you reach the bowling green. At the side of the little cottage called Dullatur you will see one of the gates leading into Loch Imrich.

This walk can be undertaken in either direction, and is on tarmac roads all the way. For a clockwise route set off from the village square towards Kingussie.

Creag Dubh (A’ Chreag Dhubh -- the black crag), 2350 feet, is a picturesque hill cut off from the rest of the Monadhliath (Am Monadh Liath -- the grey mountain range) by Glen Banchor. It is prominent from Newtonmore and its name is the battle cry of the Clan MacPherson.

An interesting route, partly following General Wade's road.  Although close to Newtonmore and the A9, it crosses stretches of moorland                      with little sign of human activity.  Stout footwear advisable.
