THE QUEEN'S VIEW,
RANNOCH AND GLEN LYON
Another route that is a voyage of discovery - lots of
minor roads - marvellous views of Scheihallion - and Glen Lyon is a hidden jewel which,
once discovered, is somewhere to be treasured.
|
| Go out of Newtonmore southbound, onto the A9, head
south, past Blair Atholl, and turn off at the Pass of Killiekrankie. After
Killiekrankie,
take the right turn onto the B8019 for the Queen's View. Stop at the tremendous viewpoint,
where you look down the length of Loch Tummel, with Schiehallion in the distance. Continue
along this road and onto the A846 along the North side of Loch Rannoch, to the end of the
road at Rannoch Station - the edge of the desolate Rannoch Moor. |

The Queen's View, Loch Tummel |

Waterfall in Glen Lyon |
Return along this road,
but turn right at the head of Loch Rannoch and return down the minor road along the South
side of the Loch, continuing on this road over the shoulder of Schiehallion, turning right
when you rejoin the A846.
After a few miles, turn right onto the minor road for
Fortingall, then turn right again, just after Fortingall for Glen Lyon and Bridge of
Balgie. This is a beautiful Glen, with a lovely river, but if you keep your eyes peeled as
you drive along, part way up the Glen, on the far side of the river, you'll see a
beautiful waterfall coming down the hill on the far side, where the stream runs under the
ruins of an old packhorse bridge and into the River Lyon - perhaps the best photograph
you'll get on the whole holiday...
|
|
Carry on to Bridge of Balgie and cross the river,
following the minor road over the hills, to the Ben Lawers Visitor Centre, where you can
stop for a break, and down to Loch Tay, where you turn left and follow the A827 to
Kenmore, Aberfeldy, and on to the A9, to return to Newtonmore.
This is a nice trip to take a picnic on - there are
several good spots to stop and eat alongside the River Lyon.
