POLITICS

Newtonmore is in the county of Inverness, administered by The Highland Council. The electoral ward is Badenoch West, which encompasses Newtonmore, part of Kingussie to the west of the River Gynack, Laggan and Dalwhinnie. There are five local councillors in the Badenoch and Strathspey District, who sit on an area committee, although Highland Council have recently introduced two councillors from Nairn onto the local committee - a move which by no means meets with much in the way of local approval. The elected councillor for the ward is Councillor Sheena Slimon.

The Scottish Parliamentary constituency for the area is Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber, where the first past the post elected member is Fergus Ewing MSP (Scottish National Party).

There are several 'list' MSP's elected under proportional representation for the entire Highlands and Island Area as well, as listed below -

Party Name
Conservative Mr Jamie MacGrigor
Labour Maureen Macmillan
Peter Peacock
Green Eleanor Scott
SNP Jim Mather
Rob Gibson

The Westminster Parliamentary Constituency was a new constituency for the May 2005 election - Inverness, Nairn Badenoch and Strathspey - replacing the boundaries still used for the Scottish Parliament which include Lochaber - current member is Danny Alexander MP (Liberal Democrat).

Of local political parties, only the Scottish National Party have a local website for the Badenoch and Strathspey Area -
