| MONARCH OF
THE GLEN COUNTRY - SOUTH (Laggan to Newtonmore) |
| This short drive takes you out to Loch
Laggan where you can see Ardverikie House - Glenbogle from 'Monarch of
the Glen' - in all its glory across the other side of the loch, taking
in many of the locations that have been used in filming the series |

Falls of Pattack
|
Take the Fort Wiiliam road
out of Newtonmore, through Laggan and on for another six miles after Laggan. The
lower Falls of Pattack will come into view on the left hand side,
as you enter a short gorge. There's a good sized lay-by on the right where you can stop,
and easy access down to the riverside. |
Carry on further, until you come to
Loch Laggan, which boasts the largest freshwater sandy beach in Britain.
On your left, just before reaching the Loch is the gatehouse to the
Ardverikie Estate, which featured in series 2 as the temporary residence
of Hector and Molly when they moved out in protest at Archie's
modernisation plans.

Loch Laggan at Kinklochlaggan |
 |
As you continue along Loch Laggan, after
a couple of miles, look out for Ardverikie House coming into view
through the trees, along the far side. Stop at one of the lay bys and,
if you're feeling adventurous, scramble down to the loch-side for a
photograph.
Continue down to the Creag Meagaidh
Nature reserve where the more energetic can take a walk up the four and
half mile path into Coire Ardair - a magnificent place in the shadow of
great crags, with superb views over Loch Laggan from the path. Turn at
the nature reserve car park - or if you wish, continue up the new
section of road just beyond the reserve and turn up at the top, to be
rewarded with a magnificent view back along the loch as you return. |

The view from the new road |
| On your return to Laggan, stop at Laggan
bridge, where the stores have been frequently used as 'MacKechnie's
Stores, Glenbogle 227). Pick up a fresh baked snack, an ice cream or a coke there, and call
in at the little craft shop and visitor centre just across the road
(which also featured as the local undertaker's in the series) |

The Gents Hairdressers in
Newtonmore |
On your return into Newtonmore, take a
moment to notice the small conservatory on the forecourt of the Mains
Hotel, which was used as the Gentlemen's Hairdressers - Glenbogle 960009 |
| - and across the road, the Clan
Macpherson Museum, which became the Glenbogle Tearooms and Post Office |
