Newtonmore offers the visitor a wide range of activities within the village lying at the southern end of the Spey Valley in the Cairngorms National Park. Newtonmore is at the heart of the Scottish Highlands and is the original Geographical Centre of Scotland making it the ideal place for long or short breaks or to explore the surrounding area much of which has also been used in the filming of Monarch of the Glen.

Newtonmore offers a wide range of excellent accommodation, including Hostels, Self-Catering, Bed and Breakfast, Guest Houses and Hotels. All of our accommodation providers offer the highest level of service. While many afford superb views of the area, others are in unique buildings. There is also a variety of places to eat ranging from Pub Food to Fine Dining.

While in Newtonmore there is plenty to do. We have two Internationally known Museums in the village:-

  • the Highland Folk Museum showing life in the Highlands of Scotland>
  • the Clan MacPherson Museum

The village also has some interesting history.

For those looking for more active pursuits, there are plenty of walks, and cycle routes from the village, and it is possible to go Hunting, Shooting and Fishing in the immediate area.

From Newtonmore you can easily access all areas of the Highlands. Within easy reach are Distilleries, the Highland Wildlife Park, a Steam Train journey or countless mountaineering challenges.

Throughout the year we have a host of events, including our own Highland Games and Clan MacPherson Rally, the Newtonmore 10 Mile Race and a Torch Light Procession on New Year’s Eve including Fireworks and Music.

Newtonmore Shinty Team play most Saturdays at the Eilan. Or if golfing is your passion we have one of the best courses in the valley with spectacular views, and our famous Golf Week.

Unique to the village are both the Wild Cat Trail and Wild Cat Experience, which are great fun for both adults and children. There is also the traditional New Year’s Day Wild Cat Walk.

Newtonmore is also the birthplace of pony trekking in the United Kingdom

Treks can be booked locally at the Newtonmore Riding Centre.

The village has a number of shops including the Craft Centre which has a range of gifts and paintings to choose from while the Trove has an eclectic mix of high-quality, locally produced crafts.

Newtonmore is home to two internationally known products - Meikles of Scotland who produce Stag's Breath whisky liqueur and the traditional Harris Tweed Shop.

New Year's Eve Torchlight Parade

fireworksWe gather at both the Glen Hotel and the Balavil Hotel in good time for the procession which sets off, to the stirring tunes of a piper from the local Pipe Band, at 23.30.

Working with other local organisations, we also promote and market everything that Newtonmore has to offer for visitors, tourists and future residents.

The Community Council is a statutory body formed to take care of the environment of Newtonmore and its vicinity, to enter into discussion and negotiation with the Highland Council and other bodies on local issues and to try to assist with any problems raised by residents of the area.
