ROYAL DEESIDE

A fairly long trip by the route that we suggest, but takes in the Lecht Road from Grantown, down to Balmoral, then on to Braemar, Glenshee and Blair Atholl

Follow the old A9 towards Kingussie and on through Aviemore, turning right onto the A95 for Grantown on Spey. Turn right at the roundabout before Grantown, then right again, over the River Spey. After a mile or so, turn right again onto the A939 to Tomintoul. Watch out for the A939 turning left in the middle of Tomintoul - stay on the 939 for the Lecht Ski Area, pass through the ski area and down to Cock Bridge.

Shortly after Cock Bridge, look out for the A939 bearing sharp right over the River Don - don't carry straight on onto the A944 down Strathdon. As you come down towards Deeside, turn onto the B976 down to Balmoral and Crathie - explore here awhile and look out for a Royal Presence. Follow the A93 to Braemar, where you can stop for a break and a cuppa or a meal, then follow the A93 through the Glenshee Ski Area down to Spittal of Glenshee, then keep a lookout for the B950 on your right for Pitlochry, turning right when you meet the B924, which takes you into Pitlochry, where you can stop and visit the Salmon Ladder at the Dam. Head north out of Pitlochry to join the A9 and return home.
