GLEN TRUIM AND DALWHINNIE

A short car tour that can be done in no more than an hour... but there are several places to stop along the way....

Take the main road out of Newtonmore south, to join the A9, turning right at the junction (south). After a couple of miles, take the right turn to Glentruim and follow this road, past the entrance to Invernahavon Caravan Park and through the woods until you come out at a splendid viewpoint which overlooks Upper Strathspey, towards Laggan. Stop here, where you will see the Clan Macpherson Memorial Cairn, which contains pieces of stone contributed by clan members throughout the world. If you like, take a short walk through the field to your right (being careful to close gates after you) and you will be rewarded with another view, out over the River Spey towards the crags of Creag Dhu. Continue along the road past Breakachy farm until you reach a T junction, where you turn left for Dalwhinnie. If you bear to the right instead, and carry on for half a mile or so, you will reach Caoldair pottery and cafe, where you can enjoy a snack and a drink before doubling back to head for Dalwhinnie. Returning to the Dalwhinnie road, as you climb the hill, look behind you for different view over the strath towards Creag Dhu, which by now has a conical shape as you are seeing the hill end-on.

After a few miles, you will reach Dalwhinnie, where the Dalwhinnie Distillery will be obvious. The Distillery welcomes visitors and is a most interesting experience - quite apart from the excellence of the samples!

Dalwhinnie Distillery
Leaving the distillery, go back the way you came, but as you climb out of Dalwhinnie and cross the railway bridge, turn right off this road onto what was the old A9, heading towards Crubenmore and Crubenbeg, following the River Truim. At the point where this road joins the A9, you will see a large lay-by. Stop here and take the short walk down the narrow road to your left, to the bridge at the Falls of Truim.

The more adventurous can take the track downstream from the bridge to the rocks at the falls, otherwise, you can use the easier tracks above the falls to walk above the river. In September and October, after rain, you will see many Salmon leaping these small falls - sometimes so close you could almost reach out and touch them.

Returning to the car, turn left onto the A9 for the short trip back to Newtonmore
