The Cairngorms National Park was
created in September 2003 - the second National Park in Scotland,
shortly after the first, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs.
Cairngorms National Park is the
largest in Britain with an area of 3,800 sq km (1,400 sq miles),
covering an area from Drumochter Pass on the A9 south of Newtonmore,
west to Kinlochlaggan, north to just short of Slochd Summit of the A9
north of Carrbridge, east to Cromdale, east of Grantown on Spey, south
east via the Lecht to Strath Don and upper Strath Dee, south to the
heads of the Angus Glen, then west and along the county march between
Tayside and Highland back to Drumochter.
At the heart of the park is the
Cairngorm Mountains - an area of high plateau that features many of
Scotland's highest mountains, but there are countless hidden jewels of
the natural world throughout the park area - including glorious Glen
Banchor, just a stone's throw away from Newtonmore Village Centre. |
