CLIMBING IN THE NEWTONMORE AREA

There are many opportunities for the Climber in the area around Newtonmore. Our central location means that if the weather is best west or east, you can make your choice on the morning and be at a host of possible locations inside an hour or so. With a mountain bike on the back of your car, even right in to magnificent Ben Alder and The Lancet Edge is not beyond the bounds of possibility within a single day - especially on the long midsummer days .....

The Creag Dubh Crags

Just three miles out of town, climbs ranging from the relatively straightforward to seriously difficult - some first climbed and named by the climbing 'greats' of the last four decades - can be found on the south western end of Creag Dubh, very close to the road - park in the lay-by by Lochan Uvie

There are many routes on the Coire Ardair Buttresses of Creag Meagaidh along Loch Laggan side - including some superb winter ice climbs - park at the large car park at Coire Ardair and walk in to the coire along a well maintained and easy path

A little further afield, the Cairngorm range offers a whole host of climbs, though many are accompanied by a long walk in!

And the North Face of Ben Nevis is just over an hour away by car.....

These pages are not the place to give routes and details, nor do we encourage the inexperienced to tackle this sport - make sure you use the SMC guidebooks and are properly equipped.

Walking and Climbing in these hills - particularly in winter and early spring - can be very dangerous - don't forget to check out the current avalanche warnings from the Scottish Avalanche Information Service

More information locally can always be found by visiting The Wildcat Centre in the middle of the village
