THE CAIRNGORM SKI AREA AND FUNICULAR
In the winter - particularly from January to March, Cairngorm is Scotland's Premier Ski Area, with many runs ranging from beginner standard to very difficult. The rest of the year, however, the Cairngorm Funicular still operates and provides the visitor to the area with the opportunity to drive to the car park at almost 2,000 feet, then take the railway to the top station, at 3,800 feet - less than three hundred feet from the summit of Cairngorm.

The Funicular opens in time for the 2001 winter season and will provide a radically improved uplift facility for both winter and summer visitors.

The future of the Cairngorm Ski Area -
a view from Newtonmore

The long and protracted argument about whether or not there should be a funicular railway to replace the ageing chairlifts on Cairngorm has now been won, and the Funicular will go ahead, coupled with the most comprehensive visitor management plan ever put in place for any montane region in the country.

We hope and trust that all the bodies involved in the arguments, on both sides, will now work together to ensure that the visitor management plan works properly to protect the Cairngorm plateau and provide many people who would otherwise never have the opportunity to experience these magnificent hills the opportunity to do so in safe and controlled conditions. What a pity, though, that the plan will prevent visitors from taking the well marked and well maintained path to the summit to experience the truest sense of being 'on top of the world' - it is, to us, inconceivable to us that supervised walks to the summit would in any way damage the environment of this massive and expansive high plateau.
