HISTORY OF THE LODGE

Formerly known as Alde Cottage built as a summer retreat by Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, who was the first woman to qualify as a doctor in Britain. She was brought up in the seaside town of Aldeburgh in the county of Suffolk. Her house in Aldeburgh was known as Alde House. 

Her husband died while serving as Mayor of Aldeburgh, she was invited by the town to serve out his term as Mayor becoming the first woman Mayor in Britain. Born in 1836, died in 1917 she worked all her life for the vote for women. She also established the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital For women in London and was instrumental in the start of the London School of Medicine for Women.
